Enjoyable romance and mystery

3 ½ - 4 stars. Captain Alec Hayes is presumed killed in the Battle of Waterloo. Soon after, incriminating correspondence to the French is found in his personal effects, and he has evermore been labeled a traitor to England. Alec in fact survived the battle, though barely, and for the past five years has lived under an alias while trying to find evidence that will clear his name. Even his family does not know he is alive. With the help of an influential friend, Alec has been working as a spy for the British Home Office, trying to prove his loyalty to the Crown in hopes of redeeming his good name. Now his older brother has died, so Alec has no choice but to return home and reveal himself - tainted reputation and all - in order to take care of his family and estate. At the same time, Alec is assigned a missing persons investigation in his hometown. A former sergeant who is father to two local women has been missing for several months and Alec is asked to locate him. It becomes clear to Alec that the missing father is involved in some suspicious activities. As Alec searches for the truth, he finds himself more and more attracted to the oldest daughter, Cressida. But he refuses to get involved with any woman until his name is cleared. This may prove a difficult promise to keep, for circumstances soon find them living under the same roof! I enjoyed this book. The mystery kept me turning the pages, there were many moving passages, the dialogue was well written and the build-up of sexual tension was excellent. Alec was a wronged hero who was easy to root for and Cressida a deserving heroine who was long overdue for love. Both were intelligent and resourceful. My only complaint is that the lead up to their romance was stronger than its realization, and that Cressida was too sexually forward - in a sort of off-putting way - when they consummated their relationship. It did not seem in keeping with her character or the times. Overall, though, this was a nicely written and involving story...with seemingly unconnected events smartly coming together as the story unfolds.

Really 3 and a half stars. Storyline OK, romance so-so

This is not badly written. The falsely-accused-as-traitor spy hero needs to get his good name back. The heroine needs to find her father. They work together. Many things happen and everything ties together at the end. Some surprises. It's not a boring book. It's just that the romance didn't quite work for me. I did like the fact that the relationship was allowed to develop before the hero and heroine jumped into bed together. My problem was my not being too interested in either the hero or heroine. Actually none of the characters was especially well developed or appealing to me. I'm giving the book four stars because a two-sentence description of an old table in a tavern (p. 96) appealed to me. ("It was dark and smooth, even the gouges worn to a satiny sheen. Every indignity this table had suffered had been ground down and smoothed over until the casual observer would almost think it crafted that way.") If she could have done as good a job with her characters as with that table, this book would have been top-notch. BTW, this slow-top reviewer has just realized that Linden's two most recent novels (A VIEW TO A KISS and this one, FOR YOUR ARMS ONLY),which are about spies, have titles which are plays on the titles of two James Bond movies.

super late Regency romance

Honorable Alexander Hayes is reported killed in battle. The rumor of his death proves false, but he is stunned to learn he has been accused of seditious acts that will be difficult to prove otherwise. He accepts a position as a British spy while hoping he can prove his innocence of the treason charge. In 1820 he knows it is time to go home after five years of being dead. His last mission is personal seeking out a former soldier Turner who can prove his innocence. When he meets the missing Turner's daughter Cressida he is attracted to her; she reciprocates once she realizes he is not the cowardly soldier who committed treason. However she is torn between her love for him and her father who she realizes may have been the cowardly soldier who committed treason. The key to this super late Regency romance is Cressida as she is torn between her love for her dad and Hayes as she brings passion to the exciting story line. Hayes is a super lead character although too honorable towards those who destroyed his life. Readers will enjoy this refreshing historical as a traitor comes from the grave to reclaim his life.
