Back of the book: Sheriff Mitch McCade had built a good life, a life based on the bedrock values of Hill Creek, Texas, the town he loved. All he needed now was the right woman to share it with. So he'd decided to find himself a wife--with the help of his best friend, Suzi Fletcher. Trouble was, none of the women he met were quite...right. Maybe because none of them were quite like Suzi--lovely yet innocent, independent yet caring, with big beautiful dark eyes... Or maybe it was because--without realizing it--the sheriff was falling in love with his best friend. I say: Mitch looks at how his brothers are so in love with their new wives and wants the same thing for himself. His first choice is the lovely teacher, Leah Thomas. The problem with that is she's afraid of the sheriff, his deputies and all police officers. Suzi works at the diner in town and is even mentioned in passing in 'For Love of Hawk', book 2. She has a daugther, but won't tell anyone who the father is, even Mitch, especially Mitch. She has loved Mitch for years, but afriad to tell him for fear of losing his friendship if he doesn't love her. Suzi lets slip that someone cares for him. Mitch then makes a rash promise/bet to find that woman and marry her by July 4th. This was a good book and had some good humor. Especially when Mitch is trying to get Suzi to tell him who she is.
