Gives a Person a Deeper Understanding to Their Own Life

The plot of this book is simple, yet complex. Skye, along with her dog, Bess, found a little girl named Karin who fell into the icy water of a lake. Skye recently had a baby who died in her sleep with a man who did not love her, and just when she was about to divorce the man, he died. Skye cared for Karin until Karin's father, Bjorn, came to take Karin home. Bjorn realized that Karin was the first person who opened up to Skye, and he asked Skye to talk with Karin more. Bjorn, like Skye, was also recently married. His past wife left him for another man, and the wife took Karin with them to another state when she was very young. They left babysitters to look after Karin while they went to parties. Karin's abusive stepfather told Karin that her real dad was dead. When Karin returned to Bjorn, she was confused as to who was her real father. Bjorn thought Skye could help Karin realize who her real father is. I don't want to give the ending away, but the plot becomes more complex as the story unfolds. I started reading this book one night before I went to sleep simply because my mom gave it to me for Christmas, and she would probably appreciate it if I read part of the book. I thought I would only get through about two pages and give up with the book, but once I was swept up into Skye's problems, I was hooked. I couldn't believe how much her life related to mine. Instead of reading only a few pages of the book, I stayed up until 2 am so I could finish the book, even though I really needed to get some sleep since I had school the next day. I laughed and cried according to the feelings of the characters because I was in their mindset and took on all of their pleasures and problems. This was the first book I ever read in which I became absorbed into "helping" the character solve their problem. Sometimes I found myself talking to the characters, telling them what they should do and how they should act. When they did what I said, I was happy, but when they didn't, I was upset because it caused them to get into further trouble. As I read further into the book, I realized it is not just another sappy romance novel, but a work of art which helped me discover more about my own life and my feelings. If you choose to read this book, you may find, as I did, that you share in the character's emotions because the book is written with an authentic voice which is inimitable. Mature teenagers or adults especially, would enjoy reading For Karin's Sake. Some parts of the book are not suitable for kids under age thirteen. However, it is a wonderful novel many high school students would enjoy. Even if you aren't big on romance novels like me, give the book a chance. You may come to find some interesting discoveries about yourself and others. The only reason I rate it a four star is because it is a little predictable.
