Insightful

Several years ago on my 65th birthday one of my daughters gave me a framed, handwritten copy of Jenny Joseph's poem, "When I am on Old Woman". I don't yet own a purple outfit, nor a red hat, but the poem hangs on the wall in my bedroom, waiting for my historical move... Therefore, it was a delight to meet the poem and the color purple again in Liz Byrski's most enjoyable book FOOD, SEX, MONEY. It is not only a novel written with remarkable insights and sensitivity, but is also a tribute to about three-fourth of the female population of the planet, who are more than twenty-five years old. It is most satisfying that an excellent author had the courage to star women, who are over the proverbial hill, have been battered by losses, are anguished by the future, and caught between the problems of their adult children on one end, and the last struggles of their parents on the other. In a society besotted by youth, the majority of women cannot find many novels in which they do not feel excluded, ( or when included than mostly as ridiculous, or pitiable figures.) Speaking for this majority, I send my sincere thanks and congratulations to Liz Byrski. (More power to Pan Macmillan also, for having the courage to publish a book with an unpopular age group as protagonists.) It was of added interest to me that after hearing author Judith P. Balogh's radio interview on WINA in Charlottesville, Virginia (USA) , I bought her book SUNSET. I found it absolutely amazing that two authors of vastly different backgrounds, on two opposite sides of the globe, in the same year, could write books dealing with the same topic, and on top of it could resemble each other so very closely in their observations and views. Speak of kindred spirits! Apparently women are more alike than different, regardless where they live and under what circumstances they live; their worries, cares, fragile hopes, fears, needs and wonderful friendships are all alike, whether they live in Australia, the USA, or in Europe. Go ahead, Liz Byrski, you are really good! Vicky Caroli, California
