Diabetes is a complex disorder that can be caused by several factors, often in combination, whether genetics, physical lifestyle or nutrition. The World Health Organization estimates that the number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 worldwide. In 1980, 4.7% of adults had diabetes, but by 2014 that figure had jumped to 8.5% and it continues to rise. It's a risk many of us potentially face today.
