Extremely practical and well-written book

As a professor of writing (including writing for children and teenagers), I am aware of the casualness with which many churches approach the teaching of children at a time when they are most open to having their imaginations and hearts and minds captured for Christ. Many teaching materials are wooden or didactic, many others are written with the often unbiblical philosophies of today's pop culture, and many teachers tell me of their frustrations in lacking training and guidance in how to make Sunday school or children's church meaningful. It was, therefore, with great pleasure and excitement that I read "Follow Me As I Follow Christ" This book is an unusual, careful, and inspiring guide for laypeople in the church who are teaching children. It forces self-examination, asks good questions, addresses crucial issues, and uncovers many of the problems which the average layperson has been unable to articulate. It is always fresh and clear.Very few books give as much attention to the nuances of children's needs in the classroom as this one. It is readable, structured practically in 52 short weekly entries, designed to be read along with the teacher's class preparation, each entry ending with two fresh and thought-provoking application questions. (Look at the table of contents in the "look inside" section to see the subjects addressed.) The book is applicable in many settings but has particular relevance for the inner-city teacher. It deals with inner-city children's needs while still maintaining applicability to other contexts.Furthermore, the book, designed for teachers in various Christian education settings of first through sixth grade students, can be read and applied by both new and experienced teachers and studied by individuals or incorporated into a church's teacher-training program. I honestly have not seen a book quite like it--it fills a void in the market. The author has worked with children her whole adult life and is not only experienced in teaching, but brings to the book strong writing and thinking skills. She has done her homework and is a committed Christian, bringing sound Christian philosophy and wonderful vision and practicality to the work. I respect good Christian thinking, fresh vision, and the love for children this writer displays.
