Usable guidebook

This is a useful first guidebook in planning an Ireland trip. The layout is usabile. Information is easy to find. Text is easy to read. The book is structured to help you determine the highlights of your trip -- itineraries, top experiences in each region, and longer texts about important sites. I say "first guidebook" because this book is not enough. The fold-out map is not very detailed - and you need a detailed map to drive around Ireland. Information on food and lodging is necessarily limited due to space. But if you prefer a text-based overview over a photo-based overview, I have not yet found another Ireland guidebook that is as good a place to start.

Fodor's Ireland 2009

My husband is very pleased with the book and will use it to plan our trip to Ireland next year.

An Excellent Guide to Ireland

A friend of mine gave me this book for my trip to Ireland this year not knowing that I go there every year to visit my Grandmother in Cork. However, it has turned out to be a great resource in any case. 27 years of visits, and this little book is packed with fascinating places I've never heard of. While I expected it to focus on Dublin (and it does, to a degree) the detail about all regions is amazing. But what impressed me most is that the book didn't make me feel like know-nothing tourist. Sure, it includes the Blarney Stone and Dublin Castle, but it has loads of tiny pubs, ruins, and other treasures across the whole island in an easy to figure out format. Fodor's even includes a complete fold-out map.

Great help, but shouldn't be your only book

This book came in very handy when I wanted to find a place to eat or stay near a city, but was pretty much useless once I set out into the countryside. The information on Dublin is VERY detailed, but I think they concentrate on that city too much and it takes away from other sections of the book. The information about Cork could have been a bit more detailed. It's the second largest city, but you'd never guess it from this book. Also, the information on the Ring of Kerry was helpful at times, but the book only seemed to cover the essentials. Luckily, I brought along a book on Southwestern Ireland that covered the Ring of Kerry in more detail...but needing a map of the Limerick area, I had to stop by the Tourist Bureau. (The city maps in the book are inadequate for most purposes.)However, this book DID mention some information about the town of Sneem on the Ring of Kerry which is more than I can say for some other books that didn't even acknowledge its existance! If you're planning a trip (or going to go and travel around spontaneously), get this book. You'll want to get a couple others too that specialize in the region you're visiting, but together they should provide a complete resource for a trip which you're sure to look back on with fondness.

A must-read for all people traveling to Ireland!!

This guide is essential for everyone planning to visit Ireland. It succinctly tells the historical background of many sites of interest. Also, the recommendations for lodging, dining, etc. are reliable and helpful. Overall, a very straight-forward, user-friendly guide to meet the needs of all travelers.
