Going to Venice? Get this book

If you're looking for a meat-and-potatoes, just-the-facts-ma'am, where-to-go and what-to-do list, this volume is not what you need. On the other hand, if you'd like the aforementioned as well as history, stories, and photographs, buy this book now! This is one of those travel books that you'll find yourself reading in your spare time on holiday, because there are so many interesting facts, asides, quotes, and anecdotes. The photos are gorgeous and the descriptions are compelling. An overall fun read. Why four stars instead of five? 1. It's heavy, with sturdy, glossy pages, and not pocket-sized, so it makes it less desirable to carry around all day. 2. This edition came before the switch to the Euro, so all details about prices are five years old, and in lira.

The mystery that is Venice

This is more than a travel guide, though it performs admirably in that department. This Fodor's version presents a lively, colorful journey through this most enigmatic of cities, hitting all of the high points, but even better, focusing as well on the lesser known but still beautiful areas. Wonderful photos, descriptions, historical detail, and literary quotes make this fun to read before, during and after a trip to La Serenissima.

Great book to research your trip to Venice

This book was a pure pleasure to read as I planned my trip to Venice. There were so many gorgeous photographs that brought the city to life, and it's chock-full of juicy, fun historical tidbits to spark your interest in Venice beyond its beautiful exterior. It's also a little more in-depth than many other books in explaining the art and architecture of the city, making for a more rewarding trip. I loved this book, thinking of it as my own private tour guide, but it's less useful for choosing hotels and restaurants (you don't feel like you're getting a candid review). This guidebook is wonderful for soaking up a real feeling for Venice (and whetting your appetite for your upcoming vacation), but I wouldn't pack it with me on the trip - it's not a "quick and dirty" sort of reference.

Great content, good value, but a load to carry.

A handsome alternative to Knopf's Venice as an all-around city guide, though the binding isn't as sturdy and it lacks the beautiful illustrations of its rival. Jammed with photos, maps, historical sidebars, lively quotations, and practical travel advice. Includes short chapters on Padova, Verona, and Vicenza. - Durant Imboden, Venice for Visitors, http://govenice.miningco.co
