Pre recommendation

I personally met the author at an air show. I was walking about looking at the different layouts, and planes that were there for people to see. I like to read books that are based on real events. When I came upon this authors set up what caught my eye was the book itself. From a distance I saw that the color of the book caught my eye. When I read his short bio that he had on a poster board It brought back memories of my time in the Army. We chatted for a while, and I learned more about himself, and his book. I assumed it was a non-fiction book, my interest has always been history, biography, and books based on real events. I eventually learned that this was a fiction book. I had made up my mind not to purchase this book since it was fiction. As the conversation went on I learned that some of the book was based on real events. As the author explained more about the book to me I became fascinated with the story. I changed my mind, I bought the book, and had the author autograph the book. He also told me to be on the lookout for the movie based on the book. I want to thank the author for letting me know about this book, and the future prospects of a movie. That is the reason I named my review "Pre-recommended". It is a highly anticipated book. I cannot wait to start reading it!

One of the best novels I've ever read.

Finally, a MAN writes about how real combat feels. What a concept! I was hooked by the prologue, then I began to realize that John Heinz not only knows how to rivet our attention (I quite literally couldn't put it down) but understands what it takes to get into a person's head; make us laugh, cry and, most importantly, convey the feelings, sights & sounds of the immediate situation, not just combat or sex or loving or the special bonds men have in dire circumstances. And the ending! Oh, My God! Just wait; you'll see what I mean.

A quick and enjoyable read

I had difficulty putting this book down until the end. The action was constant, whether involving military maneuvers, sex scenes, flight sequences, medic activities in the field, or off duty shenanigans. I would recommend the book to any adult. The author does very well at conveying both sights/sounds and emotions.

Hard to Put this Book Down

John Heinz has written a book with an incredibly unique storyline. His ability to describe the heat of battle makes you feel like you are right beside Dwight Johnson. In the small aircraft scenes, you feel every dive and bank. And the flight skills of Dwight are not something you would expect from a medic and that kind of surprise keeps teasing you with the prospect of the next unique situation in which Dwight will find himself. The author's descriptive abilities make you hear the gunshots and really understand what it is like on the battlefield. I am anxious for the next work of this author.

Not just for men

FNG is the type of book that appeals to both sexes despite the fact that it's a novel about the Vietnam war. There's a lot of action but also a tender side to it. This book is an eye opener to what lies in the heart of a soldier. The author has an ability to bring us right into the center of the war and keeps us there until the surprise ending.
