Katie is having trouble adjusting to changes in her life, such as her father's remarriage after the death of her mother and her stepmother's pregnancy. She sees a girl's ghost while visiting her grandparents and learns that the ghost(named Lily) was a Home Child who lived in an orphanage and was eventually shipped to Canada, where she served an abusive woman. Katie learns that she and Lily have something in common: they both lost their mothers at a young age. Katie also learns about her heritage, and her ghostly encounters help her adjust to the changes in her life. Although it starts out a little slowly, this novel gets interesting once Katie discovers her relationship to Lily. I also like how the story takes place today. This book taught me that children in British orphanages, called Home Children, were shipped to Canada in the 19'th century and that there are both similarities and differences in how people live today and how they lived in the past.
