A personal memoir of the reflections and fascinating episodes of the wife of a United States Foreign Service Officer covering events from the late 40s through the late 60s. This description may be from another edition of this product.
By chance last year I came across the author's husband's name as a professor at a California college and obtained the book out of curiosity, as he was my superior at my first Foreign Service post in Casablanca, French Morocco, in the 1950s. I found this a delightful read, resonating often with my own life, and providing a good picture of Foreign Service life a half century ago! I did email the author, telling her that I remembered her from early days and she informed me that her husband had died, so I will not have the pleasure of seeing him again.
A memoir filled with insight, history and adventure

Author Helga Ruge reminisces beautifully on her 21 years as the wife of a U. S. Foreign Service Officer. She brings to life her many experiences while providing insights on the culture and people among whom she lived in such varied places as Sicily, Morocco, England, Wales, Guatemala City and Washington D. C. She reflects on the politics, people and events that defined the times during her husband's service in the 40s, 50s and 60s. An excellent read, filled with truth and history, this is a book you can't put down.
