A Sampling of a Western Master's Work!

If you like your Wild West action in smaller doses, pick up a copy of this collection of Frank Bonham stories that originally appeared in various magazines in the late '40s. Bonham was one of the best Western authors ever and OUTCASTS OF REBEL CREEK aptly demonstrates why. Bonham was an incredibly prolific author, writing hundreds of short stories and dozens of novels for adults and teens on a variety of subjects. It is his westerns however that linger in the mind. Bonham populated his stories with believable characters, clever plots and historically accurate settings. Typically his heroes were tough but fair-minded, straight-talking men slow to anger but deadly once action was required. Four Bonham stories are featured in this book. In 'Butcherknife Ridge,' a young Texan fights to clear the name of his grandfather, wrongly accused of mass murder. Crooked politicians, Mexican bandits and family secrets are all mixed into the brew, which ends in a blazing gun battle. The 'Border Man' story, set in the Arizona-Mexico border country, pits a resourceful small rancher against a ruthless cattle buyer in cahoots with a corrupt sheriff. Bonham also throws in a prolonged drought, a vicious cattle thief and a young woman determined to drive a herd to California. And he makes it all work! You have to marvel at Bonham's skill as a writer. His stories flow with an economy of story-telling. The setting and dialogue all ring true. And he juggles disparate characters in clever plots that hold your interest till the obligatory guns a-blazing climax. Whether, like me, you read Bonham as a teen and are rediscovering him or are making his acquitance, you will enjoy this book.
