The best adventure yet in the series. The Famous Five spend their holidays at Smuggler's Top, an isolated house full of secrets. There, they have another exciting adventure in the underground passageways they discover. At times, the book is dating itself by the frail role the woman of the house plays and by the language and expressions all characters are using. However, this does not diminish the quality of the stories. Not only children will enjoy reading these adventures.

An early entry to the Famous Five series it was my favorite entry to my favorite childhood series. Set in the Britain of the 1930's when children wear ties and go to boarding school it might be a little hard for some children to relate to and the modern covers showing kids in contemporary cloths do it no favores but it is well worth the reward to those who can open it up. In a series full of burried treasures and secret passages this entry stands out- After a storm damages their home too much to stay in during repairs the children are sent to stay with a friend from school who lives in the mysterious town of Smugglers Top, a near island surrounded by a foggy marsh, with smugglers and hidden passages lining not just the houses but also the hills themselves. At first it seems like just a fun place but soon, as the children realize strange things are still going on, they find themselves caught up in dnager. As a child these were places I would have loved to have gone to, adventures I would have loved to have been a part of, and decades later, I'm wise enough to know I'd still love to go there. Luckily they are as close as my bookcase, as a near as a page.

When a tree falls on George's house, the Famous Five are sent to a fellow scientist's house. "Sooty" shows them how to have fun, by climbing on the city walls and going through secret tunnels. George gets in trouble, and is locked in her room untill her dad arrives. Meanwhile Timmy disappers, and Block ,deaf, is seen talking with a well known smuggler. When George's dad and Sooty disapper, the Five must find them before it's too late, but do they suspect the wrong person?

We thought this book was so cool that we wrote a Haiku on it;Five go to smugglers top pop, They have adventures, Oh no, it's time to go home.Easter Gale Castle on top of the hill Sinister tower Dogs not allowed Uncle Quentin is kidnapped Timmy unearths fugitivesI think the coolest chapter is the one where Block gets a surprise- it was so full of suspense. The second coolest chapter is the one called Sooty Lenoir. My most scariest moment was when Timmy fell into the marsh and the lorry driver had to use his planks to help pull him out. I felt so scared because I thought Timmy would die, and the Famous Five would have to become the Famous Four, and they might not be able to solve adventures the same. The secret passages were real spooky. I wish we had secret passages in our house.Read all of the series...I hope you too will agree that this is the coolest one.
