Utterly diverting, this is a wonderful read, and a wonderfully peculiar example of publishing at its best. Ellis is a fascinating character, one of those arch-conservative but wonderfully witty and urbane writers that only Britain can produce. I don't really like her novels, but her book on the evils of contemporary religion "The Serpent on the Rock" is one of the funniest books I've ever read. She died in 2005, and will be much missed. This is one of her best books, and anyone who is interested in food and cooking will absolutely love it.
