This is the second book in Kenneth Maynard's Matthew Lamb series (see my review of of "Lieutenant Lamb"). Maynard has a style that is very easy to read. There is not much extra stuff to wade through--everything is quick and to the point. The episodes are the usual fare, but written in an interesting way. The cutting out expedition is the best I've read; it's exciting and action packed. I felt like I was right behind Lamb. Interestingly, Lamb is not so much a hero as Ramage or Hornblower; hence, he's a more believable character. I'll give the same warning that I gave with the first book: the copy that I found had a rather juvenile-looking cover and gives the impression that it is for boys. In spite of the cover, you certainly would NOT want to give this book to your 12 year old grandson as a birthday present. The battles are very bloody, the language is, well, sailor talk; and the various sexual exploits make this book inappropriate for the young.
