Boarding Schools, Uniforms And A Surprise...

Firespell is yet another well written and exciting young adult fantasy. It takes place in a private and very elite boarding school in the heart of Chicago. The main character has issues with the fact that in a heartbeat her parents are off on a two year sabbatical and she...Lily Parker...is unceremoniously and without explanation...sent off to St. Sophia's. Of course there are some unusual students, some strange night time activities and a headmistress with a mystery. I loved this book...it is just a tense fast fun filled reading experience. Lily's parents just broke the news that they're taking a two-year sabbatical in Munich, Germany - and that she's not invited. Immediately, Lily has visions of staying with Ashley while going through the SATs, college application process, and the prom. Her daydream fades as her mom breaks the news about a boarding school in Chicago. The first day at St. Sophia's raises questions for Lily. She's so unsure why she's enrolled. Most girls have been coming here for years. She does connect with one of her suite mates, who could be her new best friend. But Scout has a secret, and it involves sneaking off until the middle of the night. Scout's not about to fill Lily in just yet, so unable to hide her curiosity, Lily follows her one night down into the depths of the school in a maze of twists and turns. She stays behind a locked doorway until she hears Scout on the other side. Lily has tons more questions that Scout refuses to answer in order to keep her safe. Trouble follows Lily around, and before long she falls victim to a prank and ends up locked in a room in the basement. By the time she figures out how to unlock the door, she runs into Scout and two boys running for their lives. Together, they race for the door to escape, but Lily get hit with magic and goes down. She wakes up in a hospital and forces Scout to spill the secret. Once she finds out, she wishes she didn't know quite so much. Chloe Neill starts off her YA debut with a bang and never looks back. The mysterious school, bratty classmates, secret societies, and one best friend combine together to make an awesome start to a new paranormal series. Reviewed by: Jennifer Rummel

A Great Beginning

Chloe Neill's debut YA book is about a girl named Lily Parker who is sent to a boarding school in Chicago while her philosopher parents are on sabbatical in Germany for two years. Lily is befriended by Scout who has secrets. Lily rapidy becomes involved in a battle between good and evil taking place in the undeground tunnels of Chicago. Lily is a smart and sarcastic junior in high school. The book was a great start to a series. The initial problem was resolved but lots of questions remain to be answered.

Firespell

Firespell wasn't originally on my to buy list. I've seen lots of stuff about the book the last few months. Loved the cover, but wasn't sure If I wanted to read it. But when I saw it at Walmart, I snatched that baby up. It's so rare to find good new releases there. In the end I'm glad I picked it up, because I really enjoy the story. Lily has just learned that her parents will be spending the next two years in Germany on a research trip, while she will be attending a boarding school in Chicago. Needless to say Lily is less that thrilled having to leave everything she knows behind. On her first day at St. Sophia's Lily meet her new BFF Scout and learns somethings off about Scout's late night jaunts out of the suite. Lily and Scout are wonderful characters to read about. They are both snarky and compliment each other very well. Firespell pulls you in at page one. It was both suspenseful and charming, this will be a book you'll have a hard time putting down. I look forward to reading more installments in the series. I want to know more about the Dark Elite as a whole, the dark Sebastian and the blue-eyed hottie Jason, that has caught Lily's eye.

A Great Beginning

FIRESPELL, a paranormal mystery/urban fantasy, is the first in a new series of books by Chloe Neill. I haven't read anything by this author before but I am impressed. It has a great storyline, likeable characters and well-written relationships. Nothing pretentious, it is just a smooth easy read. I believe it is aimed at teens and young adults but older people such as myself should enjoy it also. Lily Parker, sixteen and from upper NY is shipped off to an all-girls private school in Chicago while her parents are doing research in Europe. Hesitant at first she soon develops a best friendship with Scout, a 'chemistry' with Jason, avoids the Brat Pack and tries to steer clear of the Reapers. Everyone is not whom they appear to be and that is part of the fun when you read this book. Some reviewers may compare it to TWILIGHT by Stephanie Meyers but whether you liked that book or not don't avoid reading FIRESPELL. The plot is different and, like me, you will anxiously wait for the next book in this series. I really don't want to give too much more away so you can be drawn in to the narrative like I was. While I am waiting for the next novel of The Dark Elite I am going to search for Ms. Neill's other books. Enjoy! "Are you really sure that a floor can't also be a ceiling?" ~~ M.C. Escher
