Couldn't Put It Down

Once I started reading Fire and Fog, I couldn't put it down! It's not only an accurate snapshot of San Francisco in the 60's, it's also a riveting mystery with memorable characters. Toland is a master story-teller, weaving the tragic, mundane, and humorous elements of life in one of San Francisco's more colorful neighborhoods in perfect balance. He sucks you into his character's lives so that you share their fears and their secrets - until the very end. This is one of the rare cases where I hope for a sequel.

Insights about School in the City

Fire and Fog by Jim Toland is a Black Board Jungle - San Francisco style, only we get to go home and meet the parents too. Dr. Phil could do a whole season on the dysfunctional families in this story. Follow the life of Jackie, a young Italian Irish boy as he struggles to fit in with tough City hoods both in and out of school. Parents, what are your children really doing in school? Meet the neighborhood kids-- the whites, blacks, Latins and the bullies, the crazies, the punks, kids just trying to survive, abusive teachers along with the many other gritty characters. Fire and Fog is a blunt picture of inner City kids -- exciting read about SF in the 60's -- an eye opener that no other author but Jim Toland could catch so accurately. I loved Fire and Fog and you will too. Toland's best yet.

Great Read

Fire And Fog is one of the most entertaining novels I've ever read. And, I've read hundreds! The story, which spans the most critical and interesting part of the 1960s in San Francisco, is a page-turner to the end. Woven into the fabric of this thriller are unique characters and what can only be described as a tremendous, subtle, sense of humor. It's been years since a story has gripped me with suspense while simultaneously making me laugh out loud. Read this book and you'll feel as if you are part of the story. Kudos to Jim Toland for crafting this slice of life and time.
