The comment that this is vintage Gordon is not quite accurate. The earlier formula romances are better than most because of fine writing and interesting characters with unusual occupations but the reader always sees where the story is going. "Finding Bess" is a love story too, but reads more like a traditional novel. Bess is a lovely young woman, emotionally damaged by an early bad marriage that ended because of manipulations by her father, War Cornwall. He is a throw-back to when men felt free to arrange their daughter's lives to suit their own purposes. Geoff has fallen for Bess via an Internet friendship that has lasted over two years. Both are writers, so he schemes to bring Bess to his home in Tasmania to collaborate on a book. Geoff is more real, less arrogant than many male characters in romance novels. Reluctant at first, Bess quickly accepts the offer when her father once again arranges an alliance for her that will enhance his business empire. Once in Tasmania, Bess finds herself denying that she is falling in love too. But her father has used unscrupulous associates to find her. The story has high tension and the characters are colorful. There's Ida, a macho broad who arranges security, Mouse, a computer geek who can hack in anywhere, Tom, a rumpled ex-cop with divided loyalties. We have bone shattering violence, sexy love scenes, smatterings of amusing dialogue, some real surprises, even a demented springer spaniel. It's a book that kept me turning the pages late into the night.
A new, funny, fast moving love story

I loved this one. Long distance romancing, a great hero, a wonderful villain and a beautiful woman. What more could you want? Tasmania and a faint twang of an accent. A must read.

After her spouse beat her because she was pregnant with a girl, he committed suicide and she lost the child. Historical romance author Bess Carson leaves her father and Manhattan to start anew in Colorado Springs. She begins an Internet debate with historical author Australian Geoffrey Barrett. The Tasmanian knows that he loves Bess though he has never met her. Using the excuse of teaming up to write a book together, he invites her to his home, but she refuses. Bess changes her mind when she realizes that her tycoon father Dover "War" Cornwell expects her to produce an heir with his handpicked mate for her. His current choice is British industrialist Reginald Bingham. In Tasmania, Bess finds herself attracted to Geoff, but is wary, as she has learned the hard way how men behave. Back in the States, her father goes ballistic when he learns that his daughter fled to the Southern Hemisphere. He will stop at nothing including abduction of her and killing anyone who gets in his way to make sure she provides the male offspring sired by a mate of his choice. Only Geoff stands between her and War's troops.Though War is so obsessed he becomes a caricature, fans of terse romantic suspense in an intriguing location will appreciate FINDING BESS. The story line is action-packed, but also enables the audience to believe that Geoff fell in love over the Internet. Though she reciprocates, Bess fears a relationship following the lessons of her father and her deceased husband taught her. Victoria Gordon furbishes a strong tale that takes the audience on a wild Tasmanian trek while rooting for Bess against the devil, her own sire.Harriet Klausner
