CARVING YOUR OWN NICHE

DD's backup, Oldina shows up in Volume 2 to help him, Tsubasa, and Hikaru track down the last of the Magure, but even she is at a loss on why the creatures are becoming harder and harder to kill. Neither does she know what caused Hikaru's mutation that has made her unique among Figures, but she is eager to get her back to a lab where she can be poked and prodded, at least at first that's what she thinks. Meanwhile, between efforts by our two little heroines to save the Earth from an apocalypse, Tsubasa grows closer to her crush Sho, and they even get to spend a whole day together having fun. Tsubasa is going to have to figure out how to make her own space and quit depending on Hikaru to be the aggressive side of her personality. This second volume of Figure 17 was more enjoyable than the first, but just like Volume 1, unless you have seen the anime, the battle sequences, what little there are, will not make much sense. Whenever a fight against the Magure begins, the next panel usually fast forwards to the aftermath with no clue as to what happened. To me, if the writer didn't want to show the action, they should have left it out completely and focused on the everyday life of the two girls. Volume 2 also reminded me of the sadness and happiness that underlaid the anime with the inevitable knowledge that Hikaru would not be able to stay on Earth forever, that she would have to go home, and the girls would be separated. But it's not all sad, because one of the messages of Figure 17 was the speed of life and how you have to focus on the good in front of you instead of worrying about when that good could vanish! This was a decent adaptation of the anime, but an unneeded one.
