This book is based on my dog Fiby (Frithi in Greek) and how she was reared to be a guard dog for my family's home in Athens, Greece. Despite being a guard dog Fiby is one of the most intelligent and playful dogs I ever knew. The story describes her ferocity as a guardian of the home but also as gentle and loving friend, especially to the boy next door named Fingol. Fingol is based on myself but also on my best friend Vragellis who happens to live on the opposite side of the street and who also shares a strong bond with Fiby. The climax takes place in the middle of summer which is the best season for thieves because most people are away on vacation and most houses are empty. Fingol and his parents remain in Athens however and one morning two thieves break into Fingol's house while Fingol is playing with Fiby at Fiby's owner's back garden. Fingol hears the break-in and immediately runs towards the thieves. He is pushed down to the floor and kicked, being in a seriously dangerous situation Fiby comes to the rescue. Several of the neighbors go over to Fingol's house due to the commotion and the police is immediately called. His parents arrive and treat his wounds and the thieves are apprehended. Final page is Fingol embracing Fiby, realizing that a true friend saved his life that day.
