Great Introduction to Coastal Cruising and Basic Sailing Knowledge

The Colgate's provide a well written and illustrated guide to basic coastal cruising. There's a lot of solid sailing knowledge in here to provide a foundation to get started. Of course, you'll need to supplement it with additional info on navigation, engines, etc...but this is definately a book for your sailing library.

Excellent book for beginners

This book is terrific. It walks you through the basics of sailing, all the way through more advanced sailing techniques. I started this book with almost no sailing knowledge. All terms are introduced with definitions, pictures, and examples. I can understand some people becoming frustrated with the vast amount of information. I found it helpful to re-read chapters a day later to ensure I understood everything. The book will not make the clueless cruise-ready in 7 days, but I feel most people could learn everything in the book in a month or so, and be very confident stepping on a sailboat afterward.

A superb learning experience

Whether you're an absolute beginner dreaming of warm breezes and remote anchorages or an accomplished cruiser hoping to get a few pointers about the more challenging parts of cruising under sail, this book has something for you. It is very apparent that the Colgate's have had years of experience in sharing their passion for sailing with others by the way they take you from start to finish in an easy to follow way. The book avoids becoming too technical early on to get you underway, with a thorough appreciation of the basics you will find the book advances you to a highly competent level in a short period of time. The self testing techniques help build confidence to move on and `Bullet Boxes' will help you with a quick refresher just before you set off on your next adventure.
