This book follows the standard language learning pattern of: -learn new words -use them in a few simple sentences -use them in more complex situations or quiz exercises with pictures I'm a third year Chinese student and I switched to this series because I liked the layout of the book, and it's easy to follow if you are learning complex characters, and it has optional audio CD's that must be purchased separately. Sometimes the book uses new words that were not in previous lessons, but they mark those specially so you are not confused. Overall an excellent series. They apparently have teacher editions that follow the student books, but I've never seen those. This "Far East" brand series of Chinese learning materials is a solid choice, especially if you plan on visiting Taiwan where complex characters are used in conjunction with Mandarin.
