Falling Out of Fashion

Funny, touching, and engaging--This is a true story of the challenges of fashion journalism. It's a great read! Not only is it entertaining, but there are lessons to be learned from the challenges faced by the main character and her resilience and courage in response to them. Very good book!

Page-turner

Finally, a fun women's book written for thinking adults! Interesting, full of wit and humor, I read it in one weekend. Falling Out of Fashion is a fun blend of the fantasy life that most people will never experience except through books, balanced with real-world experiences of IVF, first jobs, changing relationships with old friends, romantic relationships, etc. A great read, couldn't put it down.

GREAT READ!

I just spent my holiday weekend reading Falling Out of Fashion and LOVED it. I really couldn't put it down! It was fast-paced, funny and juicy (lots of celebrity cameos to figure out!)--in short, a great beach read. But it was definitely not trashy and it gives some real insight into how the magazine industry works and provides a smart main character that you root for from the beginning. The author was apparently the assistant to the Editor of Jane Magazine but this is no Devil Wears Prada. Much more story here (the Editor is the protagonist and fights against the media corporation who buys her edgy magazine and tries to turn it into a rip-off of Glamour) and, in my opinion, better written. Definitely a good buy. Read it when you know you have lots of time to devote--very difficult to put it down!

Excellent, smart chick lit

I picked this up with some fear. Most chick lit these days feels as though it was just written and rushed off to press. I miss the days of the goold old 'a la Bridget Jones chick lit'. Imagine my surprise when I started reading this book. In an instant, I feel in love with the character, the storyline and the writing. This is SMART chick lit. No snivelling, wanting to absolutely get married main character here. This girl is smart and the storyline is written in a clever, non whiny way. I loved the descriptions of the insider going ons of a magazine, the main character is flawed but still came out highly engaging. No whiny people need apply. LOVED IT.

fun read--just bought more for my book club!

I expected just another "Devil Wears Prada" rip off but I couldn't resiste buying this book anyway because I was a fan of Sassy Magazine and all things Jane Pratt. I'm happy to say that my expectations were exceeded by far! There's an actual, multi-layered story here--not the boss-bashing I was expecting. Yampolsky's breezy style made it hard for me to put down at parts; it's so refreshing when a fun read is also well-written. I closed the book liking and admiring the protagonist, and feeling like I got to know Jane--er, I mean "Jill" better. And I loved the overall message of having the strength to stay true to yourself, even if it means walking away from something you love. There's also a lot of thinly-veiled celebrity scoop--it's fun just to try and figure out who's who. Great for the beach or the airplane.
