Great book for anyone, but has great deaf role models

I don't mean to type cast this book as "for the deaf". It just happens to contain deaf characters in some of the lead roles who aren't limited by their inability to hear. In fact it is their deafness that enables them to navigate starships through wormholes (and proves to be useful in other ways in this sci-fi thriller). However it is a great book for deaf people, especially deaf teens who might be going through an awkward stage and looking for positive role models. The author, who is deaf, I suspect had this in mind when he wrote it. As a parent of a deaf child I strongly endorse it! I wish there were more books like it!
This is a great book from one of my favorite writers!

This is my favorite book period. Not just because it is so well written, but because one of the lead characters is deaf, like me. My dad gave me this book when I was 15, and I can't tell you how cool it was to have a hero who was deaf and far from helpless. But I would reccomend this book to anyone based on the strength of the story alone. I have loaned it to plenty of friends and everyone of them loved it! Haldeman reminds me of my 2nd favorite writer: David Brin. Great story, solid science you can believe (Haldeman is an actual working scientist), and characters with real depth.
Old style, fast paced science fiction

While not truly action packed - the pace of story line and the brief character developments move you trough the plot rather quickly. If you like explorative or first contact science fiction then this is a satisfying read.
