Surprisingly Robust

I ordered this at my local library when I found out it was written by my ninth grade English teacher. When I first started reading it I was a bit worried that it might be targeted a little too young for my tastes, but I was surprised to find myself so engaged in it. It's a great story all about finding out who you are. Any one who is or was a teenager should be able to relate to it. I would especially recommend it to reluctant readers as they should be able to get through it rather quickly.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too

It's not easy to reach a reluctant reader. You need to know the students, know the books, and seek creative ways to connect the two. Tony Varrato knows high school students. He knows what they like and what they don't. His book, FAKIE, is bound to be a hit with the reluctant reader population. Also bound to be a hit with boys, especially ones who are into skateboarding. FAKIE, with its fast pace, pulls you into the story and holds your attention to the very end. The title of the book is quite apropos, as the term "fakie" refers to riding a skateboard backwards from the way you would usually ride it. Fakie describes Danny Torbet's life - he is living his life totally different from the way most people live their lives. Danny then Dylan then Zach then - what number identity is he up to? Seven? Eight? Now he is Alex Miller. This time he is a skater, last time he was a football player. As quickly as one life ends, a new one starts. Why can't he be plain old Danny Torbet? There is a good reason - if he wants to stay alive, his true identity must stay hidden. If a group of teens were standing around would you be able to ID Danny Torbet? He certainly hopes not. The Witness Protection Program doesn't want the bad people who are after him to find him either. Alex/Danny wants to look like any teenager on any given day in any town in the USA. At all times he and his mom must stay ahead of enemies. Each time their enemies get a little bit closer. What will happen when they close in on them this time? Will he rely on the friends he's made or will they pick up and leave once again? You'll have to read the book to find out! Reviewed by: coollibrarianchick

Reluctant Teen Readers...This One is for You!

Fakie, written by Tony Varrato is a very small book in size (at least the ARC I received was), but packs quite the punch. It's filled with action, from the moment the first page is opened and I was sucked in, quickly turning pages throughout the entire novel. Several years ago, Alex Miller witnessed something he shouldn't have and as a result, a very dangerous man landed behind bars and Alex and his mother had no choice but to enter the Witness Relocation Program. They've moved countless times, and taken on many different identities, determined not to let such an evil man ever catch up with them. Alex's latest home is in Virginia Beach, where he has taken on the persona of a typical teen, slightly obsessed with skateboarding. He makes friends pretty quickly and manages to blend in very well, the ultimate trick to remaining in one place for more time. Unfortunately, the bad guys are close on Alex's trail and will stop at nothing to silence Alex forever. If you have a reluctant reader in the house, namely a male one, this is a book to definitely put in their hands. It's short, coming in at only 143 pages and is so fast paced, the story just flies by. I think I finished this one in less than an hour! It was very enjoyable and one for the library shelves.
