I bought this book years ago, being intrigued by the title. I have had many opportunities since to dip back into it for insights and application. Lawton has constructed a very coherent and readable history of how the Bible has been read, from the early church on, and peppers it with salient quotes and in sights. Although he handles his material in a sophisticated manner, his use of technical terms is limited and explained by context or direct comment. As an educator, I can higly recommend this book for readers whose interests range from religious studies, hummanities, literary criticism and art history.
