A sensitive exploration of a challenging subject

Some people sail through life with little or no thought about faith. They teach their children what their parents taught them, they are convinced they understand the truth, and no further contemplation is necessary. For others, faith is a bit more complicated, especially when expectations are not met. This book is for the latter group. Kimberly Winston combines journalistic training with a non-judgmental curiosity and a genuine ability to listen. In this collection of stories the common theme is faith ravaged by catastrophe. The subjects Winston interviews and discusses are from Pentecostal, Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Millerite, Christian Science, independent full-gospel, and Jewish traditions. The happy ending to each vignette is the capacity each person has to allow hope to grow again and allow faith to re-form, in a healthier way. Along with Winston, we learn a bit about the history of faith healing in the United States, and about ignorance, motivation, and human nature. I recommend this book for any student of Judeo-Christian and related studies, but also for anyone whose faith has been more of a complication than a comfort, especially anyone who has ever been persecuted for doubting or questioning. This book is very reassuring and--in its own way--healing.

Ms. Winston's "Faith Beyond Faith Healing" Inspires

Kimberly Winston's inspiring and sometimes heart-wrenching book, "Faith Beyond Faith Healing", is about people whose faith survives after apparently receiving a "No" from God in answer to their prayer for a "miracle healing". Those interviewed by Ms. Winston have the same enduring love for God as the child who doesn't stop loving a parent who, for one reason or another, does not give them the new bicycle they so desperately wanted. Through her stories, Ms. Winston strengthened my understanding that God knows that we may sometimes need a "spiritual healing", "mental healing" or an "emotional healing" more than a mere "physical healing. According to a quote in "Faith Beyond Faith Healing", "Sometimes we don't notice the miracle we actually get. We may ask God to take the tumor away, but the actual miracle may be that we get the resources to live with that tumor." True faith is understanding that God gives us what we need, not always what we desire. After completing Ms. Winston's book, I was so filled with love and renewed faith, I found I had tears in my eyes and a smile on my face.
