Journey Through American History...

"Historic Places" is a classy Reader's Digest product exploring some of the more unique sites of American history. These sites include the former Spanish colony and fort of St. Augustine; the Piligrim's Plimoth Plantation; the Straits of Mackinanc, once a key nexus of the fur trade; Colonial Williamsburg; Philadelphia in its role as the birthplace of the American entity; the Spanish Missions that brought Europe to old California; Salem, the young Abe Lincoln's first home in Illinois; Charlestown, South Carolina, where the Civil War ignited; and Gold Rush Montana, home of one of several "Virginia Cities." A section of the book is dedicated to each of these sites, and features a travel narrative, maps, and wonderful color photography. In addition, each section also points the traveler to other historic places in each vicinity, including such obvious locations as Mount Vernon and some less obvious, such as Patriot Park in Charlestown, now home to a spectacular maritime museum. Readers Digest has reissued this particular volume every few years, but it is worth picking up even in used condition. "Historic Places" provides a fine introduction to many of the key locations associated with American history and is very highly recommended.
