Be Careful When You Dig up the Past

In this sequel to Whom Shall I Fear, Garrison Reed and his wife Mary Joe are in trouble once again. This time it is Mary Joe who harbors secrets and Garr who is trying to understand. Most of the action in this novel is actually set in New Orleans rather than Mr. Sinai, Texas. The plot revolves around abortion, those who are for and against it, and the voodoo culture of the Crescent City. There are many positives to Every Hidden Thing. As always, Dickson paints vivid portraits of his characters. Garr is an average Christian. He sincerely wants to obey God but is at times confused about how to discern in the gray areas of life. He is fiercely loyal to his wife yet cannot understand her unwillingness to tell him about her past. If you don't know much about the hidden influence of the voodoo culture on parts of New Orleans, this will be a startling introduction. With all that said, this is the weakest of all of Dickson's works as far as this reviewer is concerned. It is very possible that is simply because I am judging by the standard of Dickson's newer works (River Rising and The Cure). Compared to many other mystery and suspense novels this is an excellent work. For me, it just doesn't rise to the level I have grown accustomed to with Athol Dickson.

Excellent Read!!

I had started with Athol's "River Rising" and loved it so much I went back and read all his books...this one being the last. From now on whatever he writes I'm going to read. "Every Hidden Thing" was much more complex then "Whom Shall I Fear" and far more hard-hitting. The abortion issue was at the center of the story and Athol takes us on a murder mystery tour to find out different perspectives of a much heated real-life controversy. Well written and thought out, deep meanings pervade the entire story. At times I was mad and at times (Mrs. P) I was laughing. I really got to know Garr very well through these two books, to the point where he seems real. I would have given the book 4.5 stars if it was available. The only reason it didn't get 5 starts was because the prelude to the ending took too long. I knew the crux of the story wasn't over because too many pages where left and I didn't think the truth was told (I'm being vague so not to give away the ending) but it slowed down for more pages then I would have liked. Get yourself a copy. You won't be disappointed.

One of the best books I have ever read!

A friend loaned this book to me and warned me that I would not be able to put it down once I started to read. Boy, was she right! Suspense at every turn of the page with good moral backing. This book will make you look at your own faith and just life in general!

Not for the faint of heart

But if you like to be taken for the ride of your life on the back roads of Louisiana, then this title is for you. Athol Dickson's writing is a cut above that of most inspirational mystery novelists. If his dynamic premises aren't enough, his interesting characters follow a path of twists and turns, leaving the reader with nails far shorter than when they turned to page one! This book, dealing with such difficult issues as abortion and voodoo, is impeccably researched and it is evident that Mr. Dickson spent time crafting his novel, putting his reader and not his pocketbook first. In a day when writers continually throw new releases on the shelf, it's refreshing to see this author honor his commitment to excellence and so honor his high opinion of his readers. The effort is well worth it in this case. This is what Christian fiction ought to be.
