A tantalizing thriller

4 solid stars for a great suspense thriller by Canadian author Rick Mofina. This is the first novel by this author that I have read and it did not disappoint me. Every Fear explores what happens when a child is abducted and the mother is involved in a hit-and-run and left for dead. The investigation and search for the abductors is examined from all angles--from the viewpoint of a reporter, a tough police investigator, the father of the abducted child and many other characters. If I have any criticism about Every Fear it is this: there is such a large cast of characters that it's difficult to say whose story it really is. The back text led me to believe it was Jason Wade's story--the journalist. Yet, while the characters were three-dimensional and kept fairly distinguishable from each other, I felt at times the large cast took away from the story and from the emotional impact the novel could have explored more. I would have liked to have seen more of how the father was affected by his son's disappearance. I also would have liked to see the relationship between Jason and Grace develop more naturally, with time and with more interaction between them. But that's just me. Regardless, the action in Mofina's novel is razor sharp, the journey is tense, and the plot of an abducted child is a basic fear of every parent, and ironically, one I also dealt with in my latest (unreleased) novel Children of the Fog. Overall, a tantalizing thriller that keeps you turning pages. If you're looking for a great beach read, I highly recommend this novel. I took it with me to Mexico and finished it in 3 days! Well written, crisp language and expertly detailed, Every Fear is a novel worth reading. ~Cheryl Kaye Tardif Author of Divine Intervention

A fast-moving thriller by a master story teller.

A Great Thriller Novel That Keeps You In Suspense Lee and Maria Colson have finally managed to have a child. Maria goes to a local store and while inside, her baby son Dylan is abruptly stolen from under the very eyes of his temporary baby sitter. Maria runs out and sees her baby being taken away in a van. When she tries to stop the kidnappers she is critically injured and is initially not expected to live. Two other main characters are introduced early in the story. Jason Wade is a young reporter and he soon has a loose connection to Grace Gorman, a homicide detective with the Seattle Police Department. Together they gradually help unravel a complicated plot that could have included the baby's father. A murder of a young woman at the address found by reading the tag of the van is another part of the puzzle that may have involved the kidnapper. The plot from then on is rapidly developed until the ending, which I will give you the pleasure of reading. This is vintage Rick Mofina. It was a book I had trouble putting down long enough to eat until I had finished it. It is a great read written by a master thriller author. Don't start reading this book in the evening. You won't want to sleep until you have finished it.

excellent thriller

After years of being told she could not conceive a baby, Maria Colson gets a miracle when she becomes pregnant. She and husband Lee cherish their infant son Dylan, but tragedy strikes when their child is abducted from his teenage babysitter while mom was grocery shopping. Maria seeing what was happening jumped on the getaway van, but fell off and remains unconscious. The FBI and Washington State law enforcement investigate. The van was in a fender bender with a car, but drove off. The car driver reported the incident to a private investigative firm, avoiding the police and his insurance company in the hopes that the driver will settle off the books so he gets a bigger payoff. The father of Seattle Mirror reporter Jason Wade works at the firm and gives his son the license plate of the van. The Wades follow that lead to a home where they find a dead thirty year old woman stabbed over seventy times. The delusional kidnapper believes the child is hers and her ex-con lover has no room for a kidnapped child in his plans, making a rescue seemingly impossible. Rick Mofina is one of the best thrill writers publishing today as proven by his latest book with his ability to have his audience stand in the shoes of Dylan's parents. The suspense is very high because the story line is believable even with a deranged kidnapper. As time passes, fans will feel the growing tension especially with the multiple perspectives as the reporter, the police, the parents and even the kidnapper wear EVERY FEAR on their respective sleeves. This is a must read for thriller fans. Harriet Klausner
