Evaluating Library Staff: A Performance Appraisal System describes a realistic, common-sense approach for evaluating library staff members. The method described by Patricia Belcastro could easily be adapted to evaluate staff members functioning in any kind of customer service environment situation. Belcastro stresses the need for staff evaluation to be an objective, on-going process which is based on the observation of employee behaviors. She stresses the need for management to communicate effectively to its employees how the performance appraisal system works. There are basically three parts of the book: a description of the appraisal process, a set of case studies or sample evaluations, and a series of appendices containing the performance appraisal documents with suggested comments. The inclusion of the practical examples in the case studies makes this book an excellent resource for any organization seeking to implement or to revise its employee evaluation system.
