A fine authoritative text

I want to second the review of P. O'Neil and support his response to the irresponsible and misinformed review of M. Story. I also use this text in teaching a college course on European Politics. As O'Neil correctly points out, Richard Rose is one of the world's leading authorities on British politics and political history, and his chapter on Britain provides an excellent overview. The chapters on the other countries are equally thorough and impressive.

Accurate Reviews are Helpful

I feel that is it necessary to respond to the earlier review of this text, who claims that authors somehow didn't get their study of the UK correct, which therefore undermines the legitimacy of this book. If the reviewer had 1) read this book carefully and 2) knew anything of political science, he would have noted that Richard Rose, who wrote the chapter on the UK, is one of the foremost scholars of the country and, incidentally, teaches in the UK--not the US. The reviwer's criticisms of this chapter range from the petty (interchanging the terms Britain and UK, which one happens to hear all the time and is a common usage) to the patently incorrect (the author covers both the dissolution and recreation of Stormont on p. 92). Each of the book's scholars is a well-known expert in their field, while the overseeing editors are some of the most respected political scientists in the field. The chapters do an excellent job summarizing and analyzing the cases, which I can attest to from having taught with this book since it was in draft form nearly a decade ago. A better text on Europe cannot be found.
