a real revolutionist in his own words

This is no biography, apart from a brief introduction by the dedicated socialist worker who wrote this. Here, you read Debs and you can HEAR HIM SPEAK today.Learn to fight from a fighter, learn to feel good about it. Debs was a fighter, not a plaster saint. He came to socialism fighting to build the railroad unions, fighting against racism, fighting against American colonialism. He went to jail opposing World War I, said from the hair on his head to the tips of his toes he was a Bolshevik, and said he would rather rise WITH the working class than rise FROM it. Various namby pampy middle class reformers try to claim him, but Debs belongs with fighting workers, not Democratic party vote catchers. Read Debs and learn to fight for justice, learn how working people can change the world. Not only that, but when you read Debs you will feel so good about it.

Testimony of a Forgotten American Hero!

Eugene Victor Debs RULES! (er..ruled!). This book shows how this great friend of humanity stood up against mindless racism, poweful business interests, and the military and prison-industrial complex in the early 1900s without fear of the powers that be! The Canton, Ohio anti-World War I speech (which he was unjustly arrested for making) should have been read during the Gulf War farce and the only complaint that I have of this book is that it doesn't include his classic soliloquy to the Canton jury (although it's widely anthologized elsewhere). Today's schoolchildren who are short on true heroes should be taught of that great American who lived by his words "I may not be able to say all that i think-but I will not say anything that I do not think!" Mr. Eugene Victor Debs!

An Objective and Honest Look at a Great Man!

Jean Tussey's well written biography of the legendary Eugene V. Debs is a must read. Conservatives will accuse this man of being "un-American", but Tussey proves that Debs had more patriotism in one hand that Rush Limbaugh had in his entire body, yes the whole thing! Anyway, if you want to learn about a Socialist that cared for the people, a brilliant author and orator, a former Presidential Candidate that puts Bush and Gore to shame, and of course being thrown in jail after Amerika found out his views on WW1 were too hot to be heard in a "free and democratic" country.

Immensely enjoyable reading

Eugene Debs made his mark in American history due to his outspoken socialist views and unrelenting union activism but as "Eugene V. Debs: Speaks" clearly shows, equality, fraternity and social justice were the consuming passions of this extraordinary man. A product of the Enlightenment, Debs' unique humanist outlook was the foundation of his advocation of workers' rights, industrial unionism, women's rights beyond the vote, African American rights, pacifism and the abolition of child "slavery"."Eugene V. Debs: Speaks" is a well-written, well laid-out book which provides much insight into Debs' humanitarian views. Immensely enjoyable reading.

E. V. Debs In His Own Words, A Real Treat

This title is an execellent collection of speeches by one of the most eloquent spokesman for American workers and socialism. The speeches cover a wide range of topics and reveal some of Debs' best rhetoric. Also, with today's continual decline of workers' wages, the rise of corporate power, and the stirring of America's unions, his speeches have far more relevance for the 1990's than you would expect.
