Ethics and Politics in Early Childhood Education

The early childhood services of Reggio Emilia in Northern Italy has gained worldwide interest and admiration. Drawing on the 'Reggio approach', and others, this book explores the ethical and political dimensions of early childhood services and argues the importance of these dimensions at a time when they are often reduced to technical and managerial projects, without informed consideration for what is best for the child.

For The Advanced Early Childhood Philosopher and Policy Expert

This is not a book for an undergraduate child development/early childhood education major. It's for someone who understands the basics (DAP, play, Piaget, Vygotsky, NAEYC, authentic assessment, etc.). Dahlberg pretty much goes in depth with issues covered previously (see QUALITY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND CARE). The author attacks early childhood at its very core: we are too dependent on a monomial way of thinking of the industry--from a DAP standpoint--while ignoring other points of view of seeing early childhood a system. Politics are seen as a way to ensure that choices are made in who's system is chosen while minimzing any stigma garnered by choosing something far away from DAP. A very complex text that may require a thorough understanding of the philosophers of Paulo Freire and Michel Foucault, two scholars that the author refers to conceptual if not through direct quotes.
