Hirschman, one of the most influential development economists of the sub-disciplines' heyday, offers his take on the interplay of politics, ideology, and despair that has caused most economists to give up on the study of development. Since the changes in economic orthodoxy of the 1980s and 1990s have confirmed all of Hirschman's most dire predictions, this book deserves a wider consideration.
