Book Overview

Last year, according to The Institute of Medicine, Americans spent in excess of $33 billion on weight-loss products and services. However, the economic cost of obesity in the USA was about $117 billion during this same time period. Obviously a dilemma exists. Why? If all we needed to do was take a magic pill, exercise 10 minutes a day, or eliminate carbs from our diet, as so many "Get-Thin-Quick" schemes suggest, then why are so many of us still vastly...

EVERYBODY MUST READ!!!!

I HAVE TO FIRST SAY I AM 29 YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN USING EDWARDS PROGRAM FOR OVER 5 YEARS, I WAS ALSO A BIT SKEPTICAL WHEN I SAW HIM ON T.V., HERE'S ANOTHER GIMMICK BUT WHY NOT TRY IT--I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS WORLD!!! WELL TO MY SURPRISE "I LOVED WORKING OUT" IT GOT EASIER EVERYDAY AND I WAS LOSING INCHES FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE I WAS 15 YEARS OLD, I EAT WELL AND HAVE READ ALL HIS BOOKS AND HE IS A VERY HONEST, UPFRONT PERSON BUT I THINK THAT IS WHAT IT TAKES!! HIS PROGRAM DOES WORK, GIVE IT A TRY. I ALSO HAVE 2 HERNITAED DISKS AND I AM STILL ABLE TO COMPLETE HIS PROGRAM EVERYDAY AND IT FEELS GREAT, BUT NOT EVERY PROGRAM WORKS FOR EVERYBODY ALL YOU CAN DO IS GIVE IT A TRY, WHAT DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO LOSE? INCHES, POUNDS??

A truly helpful guide to successful weight loss!!

Finally, a sensible book to guide you to your healthy weight and help you maintain that healthy weight forever. Dr. Edward Jackowski is a master teacher and motivator and he offers the reader a choice of three approaches--all combining a well-balanced diet with either a 1)maximal exercise program 2)minimal exercise program or 3)moderate exercise program. You choose the plan and he then maps out your diet regimen and your exercise prescription in a clear, orderly fashion. Jackowski writes with penetrating insight into the human personality and also with a great deal of humor. Along the way, he explains why fad diets and fad "exercise" claims are dangerous and why they don't work in the long run. So this book is valuable not only because it is a "great read", but because the plan works. The plan has certainly worked for me. I chose the first option--exercising 5 times per week and tweaking my diet according to Jackowski's suggestions and I reached my desired weight goal and have maintained the weight loss on his plan. I do a full-body workout twice a week and a cardio workout three times per week--each session, including warm-up, stretching, ab work, workload, and cool down under 55 minutes. Jackowski believes in "smart exercise" and he teaches you how to be efficient. The goal of his plan is a sensible, balanced diet combined with a sensible, balanced exercise plan that works for you. You choose and Dr. Jackowski takes you through your plan step-by-step. Along the way, I think you will realize that the "escape your weight" plan works because it's based on common sense--what Jackowski calls "thinking inside the box." Somehow we all know that the "secret" to a healthy lifestyle is a consistent exercise plan coupled with a balanced, nutritious eating plan. Jackowski has unlocked the "secret" and he will teach it to you, motivating you along the way with a great deal of humor, expertise and compassion.

A Must Read for Anyone Looking To Lose Weight!

I am a nurse in a major metropolitan hospital and I personally treat and see thousands of overweight people on a daily basis. In addition, I have treated many gastric bypass & gastrectomy patients. Personally, I was about 20 pounds overweight when I came across Dr. Jackowski's book when he appeared on a Fox News channel interview on the common mistakes people make when attempting to lose weight. What I loved about the book is that it gave me options as to how much I needed to exercise combined with how I could decrease my calories on a daily basis. Now 20 pounds lighter, I now know why I was never able to lose my weight. First off, i was doing all the wrong types of exercises, lifting heavy weights, doing spin classes and trying to build more muscle by lifting weights. What I didn't know was that I was actually increasing my size and weight because of my misexercise coupled with the fact that I actually wasn't eating enough and thus, was slowing down my metabolism. In short, it has been nearly 3 months now and I am finally at a comfortable weight, I feel confident that I can maintain without starving myself or over exercising. I reccommend this book for anyone who has been unsuccessful in previous attempts at weight loss. I also learned so much about exercise; why certain exercises are more effective for weight loss and which ones are not. I am now more educated on how to eat properly by not skipping meals and realize the perils of "starving" yourself with no long-lasting results!Without this book I would still be facing each day with no plan or hope, this book has guided me to a healthier and happier me!

Great advice..but needs some tweaking !

The author of "Escape Your Shape", Edward Jackowski is back with a food focused plan to help you "Escape Your Weight". Essentially the book operates on the basic calories in, calories out premise. The author first asks you to select the type of weight loss plan you can live with. Do you want to exercise as little as possible? Or would you rather alter your eating habits only slightly and exercise more? Once you have made your selection, you zero in on the amount of weight you want to lose. If you want to lose 11-30 pounds and don't want to exercise much then you would be on the limited approach plan. This plan means you can eat 1400 calories to meet your goals.Jackowski stresses a healthy, natural diet. Slow, steady weight loss. He does tell you how to kick your weight loss into high gear and lose more weight quicker BUT he also tells you that you may burn out that way and you are better off losing it slowly and permanently.Jackowski also gives an exercise prescription for weight loss. These plans vary, but a typical day may include a warm-up, stretch, fat burner (like jumpe rope), upper body exercise, jumping jacks, hip work, abs and legs, etc.I really appreciate Jackowski's honestly. He doesn't sugar coat the truth. If you want to get slim, you are going to have to work at it FOREVER. Not for a few weeks out of the year, FOREVER.Jackowski gives eating plans for each calorie level and you are not to deviate from the plan. I like the fact that you can choose your meal choice and are given about 7 meal selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner to choose from BUT its a diet and with only 7 selections that could get limiting long term. The other thing I disliked about the plan is the distribution of calories. Many folks are not hungry when they wake up and have trouble eating a lot of food. Jackowski's breakfast calories are substantial equal to those at lunch. I personally feel full in the am on just a few hundred calories, and would rather eat a small snack after dinner. But on the 1600 limited approach Jackowksi would have me stuff down 2 and 1/4 cup cereal, 1 cup skim milk, 1 cup berries, 12 almonds and 1 hard boiled egg for breakfast. Thats 500 calories! A lot more food than I want. My thought would be to perhaps eat some of what he suggests for breakfast and save some of it for an after dinner snack. In addition there are no vegetarian substitutions given.Jackowski's plans allow for 3 meals and 1 mid-afternoon snack. One thing that always inspires me with a diet book is the testimonials and Jackowski's got a bunch of them with pictures at the back of the book. But there was one MAJOR problem with the testimonials, they all followed the authors EXERCISE plan but few of them followed his EATING plan which is what "Escape Your Weight" is supposed to be about. In the first testimonial the happy loser describes how she doesn't combine carbs with proteins. Then she talks about funky foods. What is Suzanne Sommers diet doing in Ed Jackowki's book?I tho

Sensible Fitness and Lifestyle!

Like many of my friends I have followed this expert's advice and books and gotten nothing but results; end of story. His programs work and make sense. Anyone can follow these programs. This book is more of the same.I have lost weight, toned, and gotten FIT, plain and simple. The exercise regimens are easy to follow. Before I used heavy weight & machines along with years of aerobics that did nothing but bulk me up. You will want to do these routines because they produce visible results in a short time, so you will stick to them. These programs can be implemented easily and are good for the non exerciser to the athlete, thin or overweight, he covers the gamut succinctly and logically. These are simple & sound approaches to eating well, exercising and living a healthy lifestyle; a nice concept to follow. This author tells it like it is; quite refreshing. Now I have a great shape that I am proud of.
