For those interested in Hemingway, his old stomping grounds and Northern Michigan in general, this book of 38 essays provides a wealth of information and entertainment. Wakefield's style is so entertaining, you don't realize you're getting history lessons while you're enjoying the stories. Many of them involve mysteries that have never been solved. Those of us who live in Northern Michigan will also enjoy learning that several local place names were taken from people with colorful pasts. Wakefield is also the author of 'Ghost Towns of Northern Michigan.' The Hemingway essay, which I thought was one of the best, provides factual background for 3 of the Nick Adams stories, "Big Two-hearted River," "The Battler," and "The Light of the World." Anyone interested in one of America's greatest authors, would find the information valuable. I could not put this book down--read it from cover to cover in a single sitting--and I recommend it highly.
