A humble, man of great faith

Caughy has given us a compact, true story of Eric Liddell; it is engrossing, heart-felt, and warming. He was humble, and a true man of God that we can all look up to for his exceptional faith and courage. There was much more to this man than what we saw in the movies, and as a track star winning a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics: Liddell was born and raised by missionary parents in China during the Boxer rebellion. His family moved back to England, in order give the children a proper education, though his parents soon returned to China and left the children to be raised by grandparents. Liddell's running career started with record setting wins in high school. In England, he was much involved in academics and sports, however, his heart was in China; God blessed him with fast legs, but he was called for greater things. After college and the Olympics he returned to China, where he found civil unrest. He taught athletics and evangelized to the Chinese. It was a few years later when the Japanese overran the country. His own new family, in marriage, just escaped the Japanese onslaught and persecution. But Eric stayed and ended up in a prison camp, never to see his family again----he would die there. Not only did Eric Liddell run for himself, but he ran for the Lord, in many ways. Also contained in the book is Eric's "6 daily questions" to himself. He believed these things were crucial for devoting himself to God. These would also be tremendously valuable for all of us to utilize. Wish you well Scott

good for young religious conservatives

This book is easy to read and consistent with other information that has come my way concerning Eric Liddell. It does not jazz up or puff up Eric Liddell unreasonably, but it does cater to the mind set of an evangelical Christian Sunday School. I gave it 4 stars because it is cheaply made and might not survive more than one reading in the hands of a typical preteen.
