As a labor and delivery nurse for 14 years, I found Dr. Gilbert Grant's book "Enjoy Your Labor" to be an informative, up-to-date, clear and concise work on pain relief options for childbirth. Dr. Grant brings to this book a wealth of knowledge and 20 years of experience in the obstetrical anesthesia field. First and foremost, this book is a tool to educate women and their families on pain relief choices during childbirth. Having this knowledge, attests Dr. Grant, enables patients to partner with their physicians to make the best decisions about their care. Dr. Grant makes it clear throughout that though he is a proponent of using epidurals and spinals for pain relief, these methods are not appropriate for everyone, and he encourages women to make the choice that best suits their own birth plan and vision. I have cared for thousands of women over the years that I have been a nurse, and I have seen numerous women present to the labor and delivery unit with serious misconceptions about epidurals, spinals, and general anesthesia, and serious doubts as to whether they should shun pain-filled childbirth for pain-free childbirth. As part of the health care team that assists these women, it is my obligation to both educate my patients on the facts about pain relief options available to them and to support the decisions that they make. Dr. Grant's book, with its straightforward information and excellent pictorial descriptions of the procedures used for pain relief, now makes that part of my job easier.

This book is a great source of information about effective pain relief for labor and delivery. It is based on valid scientific research which is up to date, and the book is entertaining and easy to read. The latest research (that was presented on the "Today" show last week by a HARVARD professor) confirmed exactly what Dr. Grant is saying in his book. Epidurals are safe and they do NOT cause prolonged labor, increased pitocin use, or other horrible effects attributed to it by some reviewers here. In fact, the study discussed on the "Today" show documented that EPIDURALS ACTUALLY DECREASE THE LENGTH OF LABOR. I really wonder if the reviewers who gave it one star even read this book - doesn't sound like they did to me! Surely, there are other methods besides epidurals that can provide comfort and support. Doulas and midwives can be of great help but they will not take away the pain, and women that had a child without an epidural will tell you that it was the WORST PAIN OF THEIR LIFE! Those that want to feel what it is like to have a baby without an epidural - go ahead. But please, don't tell me that is safer, better or makes your a better person if you do it naturally. And please don't put down this wonderful book! (Instead, you might actually try reading it!)

My first delivery which was natural was so painful that I can not remember anything so beautiful about the delivery. We are expecting our second child in March. I'm so thrilled to have read Dr. Grant's book Enjoy your Labor. It was easy to read and very informative. Thank Goodness for Dr. Grant, who understands that women do not have to suffer during childbirth and he is doing something about it. There is nothing beautiful about pain. I recommend this book to every pregnant woman.
This Book is a Godsend!

My third child is due in a couple of months and after reading Dr. Grants book, I am actually looking forward to "enjoying" my labor. It's archaic to think women must suffer through childbirth in order to be fulfilled. I applaud Dr. Grant, yes, a male Doctor who actually cares enough about the pain and suffering most women experience during childbirth. Dr. Grant's book provides well researched information, with a sense of humor, giving women a safe alternative to the old-fashioned pain producing process. Why do some of you still feel it's necessary to suffer? Whether you'd had a difficult delivery, or will be delivering for the first time, it's worth taking the time to read this informative and enlightening book. I am looking forward to being apart of my delivery with a smile on my face and welcome the walking epidural with open arms. Thank you Dr. Grant! I will take your advice!
fantastic!

I read Dr Gilberts book in an hour. I could'nt put it down. I've had 6 children and there is no reason on earth not to have pain management during and after birth if necessary. Why endure hours and hours of agonizing torture when instead there could be hours and hours of emotional intimacy with family before the big moment arrives and after with the baby. Dr Gilbert is finally saying what thousands of women have been thinking and even begging for during labor. I'm one of those women. The book is an eye opener to patients, doctors and the hospitals. It should be required reading in medical schools. The book also has a sense of humor and is not hard reading for those of us without a medical background. Ladies, know your options. This book will educate you and therefore you will have the knowledge to demand the pain management you feel you will need.
