An Affordable, Practical, and Thin ESL Book for Teachers, Tutors, and Students

While there are many fine picture dictionaries, they often focus far more on nouns and adjectives than verbs. This often overlooked ESL book fills that critical gap by emphasizing verbs in the workplace and everyday activities. High Beginning, Intermediate, and even High Intermediate English language learners learn how to describe the things they do everyday in pictures, full sentences, and with appropriate verbs. Designed for adult education students, this thin, affordable, and practical ESL book is a fine resource for English teachers and tutors working in workplace programs, summer programs, and working abroad. This book can be used as a supplemental text. When I was the director of an adult education center in Los Angeles, I bought class sets of this book. Students and teachers preferred it, by far, to more traditional, thicker, and more expensive picture dictionaries. English for Work Activities is a real winner - even if New Readers Press doesn't know how to market it. Finally, this thin little book profoundly influenced my teaching style - even for far more advanced students. I now include "process descriptions" in all my ESL classes - including high intermediate and advanced classes for academic ESL students at a private university. Why? Because students expand their vocabulary, learn imperative sentences, and want to learn the words that fit their own experiences. Enough said. If you teach or tutor English, this book deserves to be on your professional bookshelf.
