All the castles shown and written about in this lovely, useful book are castles, built for defense by the ruling monarch of the time. After the English Civil War 1642-1648 many of these castles were 'slighted' or driven into ruin. As the crown used castles from 1066 onward as control and power to keep people in line they were not treated kindly after the civil war. Many of the castles shown contain large amounts of artifacts yet standing, while others have pretty much suffered grave decline. If a reader has any interest in true castles from 1066 through the mid-17th century this book will be of interest. Many photos both black and white as well as color exist within the text. A real treat for anyone enamored with old castles. Count me one! Semper Fi.
