This book mainly deals with the social effects due to development and usage of energy at various levels. Energy shortages with rising cost confront every nation, especially those aspiring for industrial development. The economically developed countries would be able to tackle the problem by investing on technology to harness non - conventional energy sources. In addition to this there is a need to shift from energy sources emitting carbon dioxide to tackle global warming. As the world is facing energy crisis there is a need to explore the opportunities that help us to generate energy. This provides the context of this treatise.
Meeting the domestic energy demands of so many people is a challenge by itself. The Problem has been intensified as nations are aspiring for rapid economic development through industrialization. In their efforts to generate more energy, the countries are trying to tap non - renewable resources as well as the technologically newer ways to tap renewable sources. Social responsibilities for exploring, harnessing, adopting the given energy sources to obtain effective means to consume those are no less important. A time has come when no resource of this planet, including energy, should be used wastefully. To achieve this ideal, the society as a whole would require collective efforts of all groups, especially between the organizations harnessing energy and the consumers of energy. And both must understand the underlying principles of energy generation and energy consumption. The patterns of social responses to any and all types of energy resources have been referred. The issue of successful implementation of plans for energy harnessing is not purely a matter of technology. Social acceptance has come by attaining clearer understanding of the imperatives of a given energy source. There the technologists and the people must interact. While opting for the most sustainable energy use and to score success in that regard, every given country is conditioning their people to act as responsible consumers of energy. Where the societies at large have joined hands with the providers of energy by opting for processes to reduce waste and to attain efficiency in extracting the desired forms of energy like heat, light or sound, those countries are fairly successful in facing the energy crisis. One may not ignore the importance of responsible social actions in meeting energy needs. But the Process of collaboration has been complex. In nearly all countries, every choice made by the people on energy generation or consumption provoked controversies. Some contenders did not hesitate to use political platforms to score points. Judicial actions have been no less important in this regard. Political undercurrents not infrequently acted as intercepts on the processes of bringing together the visions of the technologists and the users of a given energy source. This aspect is dealt by including the values of responsible social behavior with regard to energy options.
