The Loss of a Love

This is one of the most beautiful and powerful books I have ever read. It is about the emotional experience of love and facing the death of the one you love. In a sense, it is about facing the death of a part of yourself. "Only yesterday I had worn one of his shirts for awhile, hoping it would bring an exper- ience of the flesh. But it was only a shirt, faithless, falling to the contours of my body". (p. 144) I recommend Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking to go with this novel.
