Yes, this is outdated, but it was very help!!! This was the only study resource I used to prepare for the exam. For candidates who are considering the NCE, I would suggest you first go to the NBCC website and click the link that says Resources for Applicants!! There you will find the NCE handbook. Inside that handbook, there are 13 (8 and 5) key focus areas for the exam in which you will be graded on and sample questions which were also helpful. I didn't find this resource until the day before I was scheduled to take the exam. But, I still used it to create an outline for the questions in the book. The questions on my exam were nothing like what you will see in the book. The questions are very different and the author makes that clear. There were terms on the exam that I never seen in the book. I started out trying to memorize the questions in Rosenthal's book when I should have been trying to understand and memorize the concepts and that is what the book really helped me with. Understanding how to apply the concepts I think is the key to passing the NCE when using this book. If you can understand the concepts, then it should be relatively easy to NARROW DOWN (or PICK) the correct answer on the exam. GOD Bless!!

Encyclopedia of Counseling

Encyclopedia of Counseling: Master review and Tutorial for the National Counselor Examination, State Counseling Exams, and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination, Third Edition This book is a must for any graduate student preparing for THE licensing exam for counselors. The 600+ pages appear daunting at first glance. However, the book reads like a novel with humor and is hard to put down. The book is easy to read in chunks. Rosenthal provides memory tips, which are extremely helpful. Having the book early during graduate school provides confidence, helps to get a lot of valuable information into long term memory, and is a great study aid while taking classes. I strongly urge anyone preparing for the exam to purchase the book very soon after entering graduate school for counseling. I wouldn't attempt the exam without reading this book at least twice. Rosenthal knows what he is talking about and how to prepare anyone for this difficult exam. Highly recommended, if not outrageously recommended!

Rosenthal Rocks!

I was a nervous wreck about taking the National Counselor Examination (NCE). Rosenthal's Encyclopedia of Counseling put my worries to rest. Even though it takes a lot of hours to tackle the review book, it is well worth the effort.

A Great Resource!

This is a great resource for anyone studying for the NCE exam. The author has designed the book in sections which makes it easier to study from. He covers Human Growth and Development, Cultural Counseling, Theories, Helping Relationships, Groups, Career Development, Testing and Assessment, Research and Evaluation, Ethics and Legal issues in Counseling, Counseling Families, Diagnosis. He provides exam hints that go into detail beyond answering the questions; he provides ways to remember concepts; he bolds items of importance. I take it with me everywhere!

Read it & pass the NCE!

I used this book as my primary study resource and passed the exam on the first try. It's very comprehensive, and though the author recommends reading the book from cover to cover, be sure to give yourself ample time to study the chapters at the end of the book. Rosenthal's style is easy to read (entertaining, even), and his examples and mnemonic devices facilitate memorization. If you hope to pass the NCE on the first try, I highly recommend this book.

Rosenthal's Encyclopedia

I have passed the PCLE, the Ohio counselor's exam drawn from a Texas data-base. While I thought the book was excellent, few of the exasperatingly subtle, tricky and trivial questions on the PCLE related to questions-and-answers from Rosenthal's book. Hopefully, the book is better for the National Counselor's Exam.
