Heads up for Home Schoolers

This book provides a great selection of American literature, beginning with Native American and moving on to the twentieth century. The overviews and author bios are excellent! However, if you are teaching in a Christian home school, you will find some of the selections to have been "edited" to exclude some important aspects of American literature. For example, Phyllis Wheatley, a slave who accepted Christianity, is presented as a feminist and political activist; the poems she wrote about her faith are omitted, despite Wheatley's statements about the primary importance of her faith. Of the thousand excerpts the editors could have chosen from *On Plymouth Plantation*, they focus on the death of Bradford's wife (coming down on the side of suicide rather than an accident)and put the relationship with the Native Americans in a somewhat negative light while the full text of that work shows a more balanced account. Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," stops just before Edwards passes from "what sinful humans deserve" to "what God has actually done to save sinful humans from what they deserve." At least an ellipsis is provided to show what has been done. I find this book to be a great source for information about the various periods of American literature, but I would look to supplements from the library or the Internet for full texts of excerpted readings.
