Good material for beginning/early intermediate students

I just finished reading this and I thought it was funny. It is not great literature for sure, but it is a fast read for a person fluent in Spanish and appropriate for beginners and low intermediate students. I am using it with adult students to whom I teach Spanish one on one. I used Casi se muere, in the level one of this series, and it was very elementary and silly, but the two students with whom I used it really liked it. They were fascinated and encouraged that they could read it so early on in their study of Spanish. I think little books like these serve a purpose. You cannot start every student with authentic GREAT Hispanic literature. Not all students want to sit there with a dictionary in order to read it. You need to begin with easy texts to encourage and develop their reading comprehension. In college text books the readings are coordinated to the level of the students but they tend to be non-fiction. These "novelitas" are really appropriate for teaching high school and independent adults I believe. I am not going to make my private students order a college text book so that they will have graduated readings. I also do not think reading kids' books and stories is very motivating for adults. They would get bored with the juvenile topics even if they could understand the text easily. There's only but so much you can do aesthetically when you want to make the language understood without a dictionary for a beginning or low intermediate student.

It is a great book for people that are trying to learn Spanish. It is an intermediate level, and it gives great vocabulary.

Una buena novelita

This short novel was recommended to my second year Spanish students from a top 10 academically tiered high school in Illinois. Since this short novel is directed mainly to Spanish language learners that want to succeed in developing their pronunciation and vocabulary skills, reading fluency, and cultural influence, the story itself is very simple. El Viaje Perdido concentrates mainly on preterit and imperfect verb tenses, integrating new vocabulary, including expressionary Spanish as well. In my Spanish classes, I have developed resources based utilizing cross-character analysis, journal entries from the perspective of the four main characters, geography lessons based San Juan, Puerto Rico and a final project based on students own ideas e.g. "the lost chapter". I highly recommend this short novel for teachers, professors and more importantly, students who are seeking to improve their Spanish skills

My students loved it

My Spanish students are often frustrated that their vocabulary level just isn't quite up to the ability of reading "real" Spanish Literature, but both the Level 2 and Level 1 students are able to study a short list of vocabulary and work through an interesting story that keeps them wanting to turn the pages and discuss it the next week in class.
