Svein is a young Viking prince whose one concern is to be worthy of his father's sword - to prove himself capable of succeeding to the throne one day. He has in him much of his father's steel, but he has another side as well, inherited from his mother, now dead, who believed in kindness, gentleness and peace, making her a rarity in a world of warriors. The near loss of the ring leads Svein through an underwater tunnel into a foreign land, Eirida, where he is alone. At first seeking only to survive, he is drawn into a war. Svein quickly comes to see it as a chance to prove himself and embraces the situation, but which side should he be on? His mother in him compels him to be honourable and just, as each new revelation twists his view of who is worth fighting for. Friendships are made, enemies too, and soon it becomes clear there is far more than his pride at stake.
