Effective Communication in Hospital Environment

We communicate all the time, every day. We communicate with ourselves, we communicate with other people, we communicate with machines, our machines in turn communicate with other machines, we communicate with everybody. You may find that almost every task or projectyou carry out requires communication. If we don't say what we mean, the result is miscommunication. If the otherperson doesn't understand what we say, no communicationtakes place. Hospital Environment, by their nature, is a very challenging place to be in (either as a patient or as a worker). Here we literally see sweat and blood. It is a place that people come in with pain and expect to leave without pain. It is a place the sick enter and expect to be made well. Daily babies areborn in hospitals and daily people (both young and old) die in hospitals. Hopes are born in hospitals and hopes are equally dashed here. A myriad of emotions run amok here;we experience the good, the bad and the ugly of humans.Joy and sorrow are common occurrences and everyday realities. Constantly efforts are made been made to make it safe and comfortable for patients, their families and the hospital staff. To ensure that the hospital environment is less of a hell and more of a heaven on earth, we need effective communication. Therefore, effective communication is absolutely necessary .It is a matter of life and death.Without effective communication it would be therefore impossible for any hospital to still fulfill its mandate. The hospital environment operates as a hierarchy system. The doctors (with the Chief Medical Director) sit at the helm of the medical system hierarchy .Today doctors are not the-know-all-be-all-for the patient care experience. There are equally other core and even ancillary professionals that constitute the health team vital for the health and well being of the patient. They must all communicate effectively and truthfully. Communication is therefore an important part of any relationship but especially between physician and patient. Effective communication is critical to proper diagnosis, appropriate medication dosing and ensuring patient compliance with a treatment regimen. There are fourteen chapters in this book with lots of pictures and diagrams. The book is mainly for hospital staff and contains basic information about the kinds of communication needs people have. It includes information about how to communicate with kinds of people that oneis likely to encounter in the hospital. The chapter on prospects of effective communication withinthe hospital environment.
