Book Overview

Arthur Chickering and Linda Reisser have produced an intelligent and penetrating scholarly work that is a worthy sequel to its distinguished predecessor. If the history of Education and Identity is any indication, this second edition will take its place among the classics in higher education literature. ?Ernest T. An important classic in higher education

Chickering and Reisser's theory is a highly important, classic theory about how college students develop personally and interpersonally throughout their college years. This volume is on many of the shelves of student affairs professionals across the nation and should be on the shelves of the others. It can also help others who work with college students -- and perhaps even their parents -- understand some of the normal developmental patterns experienced by traditionally aged college students during their college years. The theory isn't perfect, and it could use some revision. It would be nice to have a new edition of the book with a revised theory. Still, this classic work has, and should have a central role in the study of college students for years to come.

An Important Text

This is THE historical text on student development. I read a previous review that said it was out of date - it's no more out of date than any other 1970's conceptual piece on human development (that's the original date). It is an invaluable resource for serious student development specialists to consider and from which to gain initial insight and on-going models. I just purchased my second copy in order to continue my research - yes there are many others, however if not for this book, and Chickering, there wouldn't be those more recent books - an excellent resource.
