Hard to overemphasize Gatto's importance

Gatto is exactly the kind of man that insular organizations fear: someone who rises to prominence within the group, one to whom the group's elites award laurels as a standout among them...one who then uses these uncontestable credentials to publicly deride the group (in this case the public school system, teachers' unions, et al.). He is a superb essayist, writing with a command of composition that reminds me of Swift, and a passion that evokes Thoreau. I always knew that the public school system I and so many others suffered was harmful, but until I read this book, I did not realize how harmful. Demonstrating how to do it correctly had the painful secondary effect of illuminating how bad the wrong methods really are. Those of you who have not taken charge of your child's education should read this book and then do so.
